Angels Unaware

God sends angels in mysterious and unexpected ways.  We children of God are asked to be angels – messengers – whether we are aware of our role or not.  We are called on to be angels not by God Out There, but by God In Here, with us, Emmanuel.

The Genesis Trilogy:  A Stone for a Pillow

Madeleine L’Engle

Can’t you just sometimes feel it?  A phone call?  A text?  Words from a friend – or stranger?

It’s not so much what is said.  It’s the words beneath the words.  The timing.  The facial expression.  A look.

OMG. . .In So Many Ways. . .God’s messenger?  An Angel unaware?  Maybe.  Yes, I think.

Like the day Lucy died.  Having lunch at La Fonda.  Molly laying on her blanket.  An older couple walk by.

The gentleman says one of the familiar comments we hear: “Do you have a saddle for that horse?”

I laugh.  Like it’s the first time that has been said to me.

I reply, “Well our other one, Lucy, was even bigger.  But we just had to put her down, two hours ago.”  Tears welling up.

OMG. . . this gentleman came over and put his arms around me.  His eyes spoke before words were uttered.  “You are the salt of the earth,” he said.  “I am so very sorry for your pain.”

OMG. . .In So Many Ways. . .God’s Messenger.  An Angel.  This elderly gentleman.

I hope sometimes I can be an Angel.  That my words touch a heart.  That a nudge to reach out is God asking me to be His messenger.  His Angel.

They are all around.  We need them.  He sends them. Angels unaware.
